The Politics of "Hope & Change"!?

No surprise that Obama has proclaimed himself the winner through disenfranchisement of millions of voters - he's done it before.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local /chi-070403obama-ballot,1,57567.story

As the Chicago Tribune reported on April 3, Obama knows his way around a ballot and disenfranchising voters seems to be a pattern of his in an effort to win.

In '96, Obama challenged hundreds of signatures on a petition for nominating popular Chicago state senator Alice Palmer. Obama launched a campaign against her and other rivals to get this seat in the Illinois State Senate. In doing so, he managed to throw out the will of the people and ensure that he, and only he, was the only name on the ballot.

Not only did Mr. Unity force the beloved Alice Palmer from the ballot, he eliminated a long-shot contender who was champion for the little guy and voter's rights.

Obama's reasons for pushing his opponents off the ballot was that he was "simply following the rules". But it was a legal manuever to ensure his win. When asked whether the voters were well-served by having only one candidate to vote for, Obama stated: "I think they ended up with a very good state senator."

I guess this is Obama's idea of "Change you can Believe in".

the rule of law (2.00 / 2)

Most people consider the rule of law to be a concept central to democracy. That means that everyone must follow the same rules. If you don't have that, then only some people follow the rules, thus corruption.

I want a president who believes in being bound by the law, unlike the guy we have there right now.

Moving on... (none / 0)

It's over. Just heard that two long time HRC staffers, employed in principle until November, have been told that the job ends Tuesday.

Now, can we stop finding every bit of tittle-tattle to bash the presumptive nominee?

I should have got rid of the question mark in the last sentence. I can already guess the answer...

Who is the presumptive nominee? (none / 0)

Are they a Democrat?

Universal healthcare IS a core Democratic value
Without a REAL committment to it, we WON'T win in November.

Obviously (none / 0)

Obama's a democrat, cut in the cloth of FDR, JFK and RFK. The more pressing question from your comments, Architek

ARE YOU?

Re: (none / 0)

bad time to note the Huff post is quoting the Associated Press when they say

The Associated Press interviewed a third of the panel members and several other Democrats involved in the negotiations and found widespread agreement that the states must be punished for stepping out of line. If not, many members say, other states will do the same thing in four years.

"We certainly want to be fair to both candidates, and we want to be sure that we are fair to the 48 states who abided by the rules," said Democratic National Committee Secretary Alice Germond, a panel member unaligned with either candidate. "We don't want absolute chaos for 2012.

Congratulations to Barack Obama, the presumptive Presumptive Democratic Nominee

I'm afraid you're not being completely honest (2.00 / 2)

here -

Whether by intention or just not knowing the whole story.

In 1996, Alice Palmer decided to retire from her IL State Senate seat to seek a Congressional seat.

She actually touted Obama as a suitable replacement -- this is from the very article you cite:

Palmer served the district in the Illinois Senate for much of the 1990s. Decades earlier, she was working as a community organizer in the area when Obama was growing up in Hawaii and Indonesia. She risked her safe seat to run for Congress and touted Obama as a suitable successor, according to news accounts and interviews.

and later in the article:

At the same time, the South Side's political map was thrown up for grabs when then-U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds was convicted of sex crimes and a special election was called to fill his congressional seat.

Palmer joined the race and, according to multiple accounts, introduced Obama as the successor for her Illinois Senate seat.

"She said, 'I found this wonderful person, this fine young man, so we needn't worry that we'd have a good state senator,' " said former 5th Ward Democratic committeeman Alan Dobry, who volunteered to help both Palmer and Obama that year.

Living in Chicago, I have a vague recollection of the incident...

Palmer lost the congressional race - then went back on her word, and wanted to retain her IL Senate seat... She asked Obama to stand down - and he refused.  A perfectly legitimate response.

At this late date - it was tough for Palmer to get back on the ballot... she gambled, lost, and basically wanted what she had gambled (her IL Senate seat) back.

Why was it right for Palmer to tout Obama to take her seat when she set her sights on a congressional seat -- then go back on her word, and ask Obama to leave the race?

nikkid for your quality (none / 0)

diary I can only say that GLaDoS agrees with you:

This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.
I'm so CONCERNED
I do what I must
because I can.
For the 'good' of all of us.
Except the ones who are calm.
But there's lots sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on being 'concerned' till you run out of cake.
And the Doubt gets sowed.
And you annoy the bold
For the people who are still calm.

I'm not even concerned.
I'm being so insincere right now.
Even though you broke my talking points.
And mocked me.
And tore my points into pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
As they burned it hurt because I was so concerned for you!

Now these points of "data" make a beautiful line.
And we're out of talking points.
We're concerned all the time.
So I'm GLaD. I got concerned.
Think of all the things we tried
on the people who are still bold.
Go ahead and leave me.
I think I prefer to stay concerned.
Maybe John McCain
THAT WAS A JOKE.
HAHA. FAT CHANCE.
Anyway, this concern is great.
It's so delicious and moist.
Look at me still talking
when there's doubt to be sown.
When I look out there, it makes me GLaD I'm concerned.
I've diaries to right.
There is logic to fight.
from the people who are still bold.
And believe me I am still concerned.
I'm doing not so well and I'm still Concerned.
I feel CONCERNED but you're still calm.
While you're calm I'll be still concerned.
And when you're victorious I will be still concerned.
STILL CONCERNED
